Much of the Bible is written as God’s documentary on humanity and not His commentary on how He wants us to do life. The book of Esther is a great example. We like to spiritualize the story and make it about a young woman who won a beauty contest and captured the heart of a king. But the real story is about a king who dumped his wife because she wouldn’t dance for him. So he decided to have a contest with all the most beautiful virgins in his country to see which one he likes to have sex with the most and then marries her. Thankfully, Esther is not the second runner up, or the story would have gotten really ugly.
